Supplemental Security Income, also known as SSI, is a monthly stipend distributed to disabled individuals with a low level of income. SSI differs from Social Security Disability Insurance in that you are not required to have a work history. SSI benefits may also be available for disabled children whose parent or guardian is at a low income level.
The Social Security Administration manages the SSI program, but Supplemental Security Income is not paid for by Social Security taxes. SSI is paid out of general U.S. Treasury funds.
